Bird Watching At Crab Orchard Refuge

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge offers area visitors the opportunity to view over 245 species of birds. Another 29 species of birds, which are rarely seen in or out of their normal range, are occasionally observed. Bring your binoculars and camera to view spectacular waterfowl displays of geese and numerous species of ducks as they migrate to their southern wintering grounds. Birdwatching is not just a fall enjoyment but also a yearlong experience. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service encourages you to come to Crab Orchard Refuge and view many of these species. The Visitors Center on Route 148 has a checklist of birds found on the refuge and suggested viewing areas. You may call them at (618) 997-3344.
